Marcia Deakin, NextGen Co-Founder, shortlisted for the MCV/DEVELOP Women in Games Awards 2023

Marcia Deakin, NextGen Co-Founder, has been shortlisted in the Educational Impact category for the MCV/DEVELOP Women in Games Awards 2023!

Marcia is one of the Co-Founders of NextGen Skills Academy and has been integral to its success in developing new qualifications and pathways into the Games and creative industries, she works tirelessly to bring education and industry together to inspire and positively impact others.

Some recent highlights of her career in games education include working with Ubisoft and Sunderland University to develop the Level 7 Community Manager Apprenticeship Standard, the first apprenticeship designed specifically for the games industry. She also developed the innovative curriculum for the ongoing Warner Bros Discovery Access X Rocksteady Games Academy, which is currently giving 20 aspiring game devs from underrepresented backgrounds a fully immersive bootcamp learning experience across Games Design, Art, Audio, and QA.

Marcia is dedicated to increasing learning opportunities for underrepresented groups to discover and be inspired to work in games. This is best exemplified by the short-course she created and continues to deliver for The Prince’s Trust, Get Started in Games Design. This course, which is supported by PlayStation, gives young people who are not in employment/training an introduction to the games industry over five days, with a series of team practical tasks, information, industry masterclasses, networking, and confidence building.
