NextGen tutors continue to refine their skills with Nuke Masterclass

NextGen tutors recently visited Sheffield College for a two-day Nuke Masterclass as part of their Continuing Professional Development, helping to ensure our tutors are always learning and passing on their knowledge and new skills to NextGen students.

The masterclass, focused on the Nuke interface, was delivered by Ian Murphy, a VFX industry professional and certified compositing coach with years of experience of delivering VFX for studios and leading training schemes.

The training covered working with nodes, 2.5D projection with basic Digital Matte Painting (DMP) onto cards, masking, colour correction, green screen extractions and the integration of a cg element into a filmed live action plate. Tutors were coached through a series of small exercises that allowed them to develop skills in: green screen keying and colour correction; using a tracked camera to create a background environment on 3D cards and integrating a cg element into a scene.

James Bennett-Hill, Curriculum Team Lead & Lecturer in Games Development at The Sheffield College, said of the training:

“I just want to say a special thanks to Ian for traveling to The Sheffield College and providing a 2-day Nuke training Masterclass for all the NextGen tutors that attended. Ian is a great tutor, teaching us the ‘how’, but also the ‘why’, which really helps to understand the software and industry processes, so we can effectively teach our own students.
“The two days were really engaging, where we were able to work on previously used film footage, completing a range of practical tasks, learning industry skills and workflows. Thanks also to the NextGen team for organising this, this will really benefit and prepare the tutors for delivery, and more importantly better prepare our students.
“Thank you to Laura and the team at Sheffield College for helping with all the catering and organisation. Thanks also to the Foundry Team for providing the Nuke licenses for the training and for all the technical support to help get everything up and running. We can’t wait to start teaching the software!”
